My Life and the IO Waiver
by Anna and her mother, Kelly.
Summer, 2009

My name is Anna. Currently I live in Dublin city in Delaware County. I am 15 years old. I have cerebral palsy and am wheel chair bonded. My family, teachers and caregivers always say that I am a lovely girl with sunshine smile.

My family moved from Atlanta, GA to Dublin city, south of Delaware County in Jan 2006. Shortly after my mom contacted MRDD, my case manager Deb Gibson came to visit us in our house. With the help from MRDD, we modified our bathroom to a roll in shower and got a shower chair. I enjoyed taking shower so much, especially when the hot water running through my toes, and I was laughing all the time. One and a half year later, I got the Level 1 Waiver. Roxanne Richardson became our new case manager. With the help from the Roxanne and Level 1 Waiver program, my mom ordered a swimming raft which allows me to float in the swimming pool or in a hot tub. Since I have cerebral palsy and my circulation is so bad, I always have cold hand and feet. I enjoyed hot tub so much and every time I went to hot tub, I fall to sleep while surrounding by the hot water. I feel so good. I also got bed protector and position pillows, etc, which allow me to lie well on bed. With the help from MRDD, I am able to go to summer camp in Recreation Unlimited every year. I had so much fun. MRDD from Delaware County even arranges bus to pick me up, what a relief to my family.

Most importantly, I got nurse and nurse aid to help me for daily living. I enjoy being with people. My parents feel much relieved from many years of intensive caring schedule. My mom likes the care giver to read book for me. Nurse Denise even went to the library every couple of weeks and borrowed audio story CD for me, so I always listened to many new stories every couple of weeks. With the help from the care giver, I can go to zoo, enjoy hot tub and go around the community and walking trial. When I need a quite time, I will listen to CD story or watch TV or video at home. My parents are so glad to see that my life quality has improved a lot.

We are looking forward to getting our IO waiver soon. I wish to stay with my parents and family in homecare with the help from IO Waiver, even when I grown up.

I feel so blessed to live in this caring community. Delaware county MRDD and our case managers are all very helpful and responsive. I just had my new case manager Susan Swipes. I am sad to know that one of my friend who has cerebral palsy; their family broke up several years ago in Atlanta GA because of lack of help. Without the help, parents with disables children can be very stressful. The Waiver program has been helping me and my parents tremendously. Now both my parents and I are enjoying our lives much more.
